Deann Wood
1. Why did you decide to attend World Wide College of Auctioneering?
3 years ago we were at an auction and I was enjoying myself. When all of a sudden, I found myself honing in on the auctioneer.  WOW, something about what he was doing intrigued me.  I thought “I could do that, after all I do talk a lot”. Those who know me will understand that all to well. It was in the back of my mind for 2 years, every once in a while the thought of auctioneering would start chirping in my head.  I’d think about it, talk about it, then do nothing about it.  I was injured on the job and not working wondering what I was going to do with my free time…guess what happened…head started chirping again, Mitchell (my very significant other) said “would you just go to school already!”  So I said okay, I enrolled and I went to auctioneering school in February 2015.  This has turned out to be one of the best gifts I have ever given myself!
2.  What one thing surprised you the most about auction school?
The Auction Community as a whole was the biggest surprise.  I’ve been in the Corporate World for a very long time.  It’s a “dog eat dog” world and full of negativity and uncaring insincere people.  It’s all I knew, and that corporate world was slowly eating away at my soul.
At World Wide College of Auctioneering I was introduced to the Auction Community where seasoned auctioneers give of themselves on a daily basis to guide and teach you how to become the very best auctioneer you can be. The WANT you to succeed! They share their knowledge and skills in a manner I’ve never known from other professionals.  You can ask, they will share, it’s the “AHA” (auctioneers helping auctioneers) moments that make this profession great!
3.  What state do you live in?
The beautiful 4 season state of IOWA!  “GO HAWKS!!”
4.  How many auctions have you attended this past year?
I don’t really count them, lots I'd say.  There is just a magic about an auction.  There’s excitement in the air, everything is moving quickly, people coming and going, it’s fascinating. I don’t count them, can you say exactly how many concerts you’ve been too?  Me either, I just know that the Auctioneer, well, they are the ROCKSTARS!
5.  Tell us about your family.
My family.  It consists of many people blood and not by blood and I’m thankful for everyone in my life.  I have two grown children.  Kane my son,(26 yrs old), who is gearing up for his own adventure preparing to move to California to see what life will bring him.  I’ll miss him, but I’m sure proud of him and his courage to chase a dream.  Kara my daughter, (25 yrs old), is an Interior Designer in Des Moines and married to Joe Keeran.  I’m super lucky to have been blessed with a son-in-law whom I consider one of my very own children.  Kara & Joe have also blessed my life with a grandson named Elijah who is 3 years old.  Words don’t express the love of a grandchild…he’s my world. Last but not least in any means is Mitchell.  He’s supported me every step of the way so far in my journey as an auctioneer and the one who showed me I could pursue whatever I wanted out of life.
My family, Mitchell, Kane, Kara, Joe and Eli…I’m blessed beyond words.
6.  If you could live anywhere in the world, where would you choose to live?
I’d live anywhere, the place doesn't make a person, the person makes a home where ever they may be.
7.  Tell us about one "aha" moment while attending auction school.
My biggest moment “AHA” moment was at the student auction on Friday evening.  Our class was very close and most of us knew each others back stories.  Anyway, I was second to the last to get up and sell and I was very nervous but I wanted to do this for ME.  I got up, sold my 3 items and when I was finished my entire class of 50 other amazing people rose to their feet and gave me a standing ovation.  It was an extremely touching moment in my life.
8.  Do you have a favorite quote that motivates you each day?
“What I know for sure is this:  You are built not to shrink down to less, but to blossom into more.  To be more splendid. To be more extraordinary”
9.  How many siblings do you have?
I have 3 brothers.
10. Do you have a favorite auction company, if so, which one and why?
Well, Wood Auctioneering & Associates is my favorite, because it’s mine.  My dream, my hard work, my labor of love and it’s me.  I’m proud of what I have accomplished since graduating in February 2015 from World Wide College of Auctioneering and it’s because of WWCA and their excellent training that Wood Auctioneering & Associates is growing and moving ahead.  My first auction 4 months out of school I sold 2 household estates, 3 houses and a plot of land.  I’m now working on my first consignment auction to be held August 27th.  WWCA gave me the tools, resources and opportunity…I’m ready to make my stand in the auction world.
